What’s in a name – Bwlch y Moch

RAW Adventures - Bwlch y Moch

What’s in a name – yn Gymraeg? The second in our Friday musings on Eryri place names.

Last week, Yr Wyddfa…

This week…’Bwlch y Moch’ – this is the ‘pass’ (bwlch) you reach upon walking along the Pyg Track on Snowdon, until where you can turn off to Crib Goch, and where views of Llyn Llydaw stretch out before you – a wonderful (windy) spot!

Interestingly, it could be argued that ‘Moch’ could derive from the Old Irish (mo,mos) for ‘first’ or ‘early’ or from the Latin (mox) for ‘soon’ or ‘directly. Hence, this could translate as the ‘First Pass’, rather than ‘Pass of the Pigs’ as we also come to think of this place…(from the Celtic ‘moccus’).

The image is Bwlch y Moch under heavy snow in December 2010… will we receive this blanket again this year?

(Note to self…it was ridiculously difficult to move through without skis or snowshoes!)
