Mountain Training logo - RAW Adventures

Delivered by RAW’s qualified trainers and designed by awarding body Mountain Training, Mountain Skills is ideal for anyone wanting to extend their hill-walking experience to more challenging mountainous areas. Over two days, in the stunning setting of Eryri (Snowdonia), you’ll learn the skills and techniques to safely enjoy mountain walking, to look after yourself in changeable mountain conditions and explore new landscapes with confidence.

In small groups of just 8 people, you’ll learn:

  • How to confidently navigate and route-find in the mountains, including selecting a compass and using a map, navigation in poor visibility and an introduction to GPS
  • What to take, how to pack and essential equipment and clothing
  • How to deal with common mountain hazards, and what to do in an emergency
  • Simple scrambling techniques and efficient movement over steep ground
  • Weather forecasting in the mountains and an understanding of the effects of weather on your day
  • An in-depth understanding of the mountain landscape, including how to explore sustainably and minimise your impact on the environment

Mountain Skills with RAW Adventures

With over 40 years’ combined mountain leading experience, the RAW Team is passionate about supporting people to be independent mountain walkers. We understand that mountain environments can be intimidating at first, so we keep our training groups small (1 trainer to every 8 participants), enabling us to provide a safe, sociable experience that’s tailored precisely to the needs of each group. Our Mountain Skills leaders allow plenty of time for enjoying the beautiful places you’ll be learning in, and to share their in-depth local knowledge.

RAW Adventures is proud to be an accredited Mountain Training provider. If, after your course, you’re inspired to take your experience further and learn to lead others, we offer a wide range of courses to continue your outdoor journey. Mountain Skills is frequently used as a stepping stone to the Hill & Moorland Leader, or Mountain Leader qualifications.

Fabulous course delivered expertly by Helen and Dan, it was fun and interactive, ample opportunity to ask questions and consolidate learnings. They had a wonderful way of teaching which flowed through the day covering all aspects of the syllabus which we then reviewed the following day. Would highly recommend RAW Adventures.
