I completed my Lowland Leader course and assessment with RAW Adventures, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The company was recommended by a fellow hiker and friend, so I already had confidence I’d be in good hands, and they absolutely delivered.
Both the course and assessment were run locally for me, and everything was organised professionally from start to finish. The team created a supportive and well-structured learning environment that really helped build my confidence.
A special shout-out to Cara, who was both professional and incredibly friendly. She made everyone feel at ease during the assessment, which made a big difference. Her experience and approachable teaching style meant we learned a lot while still genuinely enjoying ourselves. I feel very lucky to have worked with someone of her calibre.
If you’re considering a course, assessment, or trip with RAW Adventures, I highly recommend them, you won’t be disappointed.

Intro to Winter Mountain Skills
January 2026
My son joined RAW for their Winter skills Gold DofE residential course.
Booking was very easy (with the added bonus of being able to pay for the course in installments) and communication in the lead up to the course excellent. A lift to/from the local station was also offered.
The course accommodation was superb and situated close to a prime winter skills venue. Catering was top notch (the venison curry cooked by the instructors a highlight).
My son was impressed by the equipment that was lent (helmets/axes/boots/crampons). It would have been very easy to spend the entire 5 days locally but RAW gave a much more varied experience visiting a number of top quality venues.
The course covered all you'd expect from a winter skills course, ice axe arrest, moving with axe and crampons, weather and avalanche awareness and the highlight for my son, digging snow holes. The instructor/student ratio was superb and my son spoke very highly of both instructors.
The course met all the requirements of his DofE residential and the assessor's report was added to his eDofE account just a couple of days after the course.
