Environmental Awareness on Your DofE Expedition

Environmental Awareness on Your DofE Expedition - RAW Adventures

Embarking on a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition is an incredible adventure, a chance to challenge yourself and connect with the stunning landscapes of the UK. But with this adventure comes a responsibility: to protect the very environments we explore. As your DofE manager, I want to ensure we’re not just adventurers, but custodians of our natural world. Let’s delve into how we can minimise our impact and leave our expedition sites as pristine as we found them.

The Golden Rules: Leave No Trace (LNT)

Imagine every footstep, every discarded wrapper, leaving a lasting mark. That’s why the Leave No Trace principles are our expedition’s compass. They’re not just rules; they’re a philosophy for responsible outdoor living.

  • • Plan ahead and prepare: Research your route, understand the local environment, and pack efficiently. This reduces unnecessary waste and potential impact.
  • • Travel and camp on durable surfaces: Stick to designated paths and campsites. Avoid trampling fragile vegetation.
  • • Dispose of waste properly: “Pack it in, pack it out” is our mantra. Everything you bring, you take back – food scraps, wrappers, tissues, everything.
  • • Leave what you find: Resist the urge to take souvenirs. Leave rocks, plants, and historical artifacts undisturbed.
  • • Minimise the effects of fire: Use stoves with consideration for the surrounding ground whenever possible. Be mindful of long grass, and never cook on a bench or table.
  • • Respect wildlife: Observe animals from a distance, avoid feeding them, and keep noise levels down.
  • • Be considerate of other visitors: Share the trails, be courteous, and respect others’ experiences.

Waste Wise: Beyond the Bin

It’s not just about litter; it’s about the whole waste cycle.

  • • Food footprint: Plan meals to minimise leftovers and packaging. Leftovers need to be packed out or binned, and never fed to wild animals or left in hedges.
  • • Human waste: Go before you go. Make the most of facilities on camp and public toilets if you can.
  • • Packaging patrol: Opt for reusable containers and water bottles. Choose products with minimal packaging to reduce waste from the start. If possible, remove as much packaging as you can before leaving home and recycle it there.

Ecosystem Etiquette: Respecting the Delicate Balance

Our actions have ripple effects.

  • • Soil saviour: Stay on established paths to prevent soil erosion. When off trail be aware of the impact.
  • • Water watcher: Never wash with soap directly in streams or lakes. Grey water should be dispersed away from water sources.
  • • Wildlife whisperer: Keep noise and light to a minimum, especially at night. Observe animals from a safe distance and never disturb their habitats. Be especially aware of livestock and farm animals.

Sustainable Steps: Gear and Practices

Every choice matters.

  • • Eco-equipment: Invest in durable gear made from recycled or sustainable materials. Consider the carbon footprint of your equipment.
  • • Energy efficiency: LED headlamps are far superior to older bulb types.
  • • Sustainable cooking: Fuel-efficient stoves and biodegradable washing-up liquid are your allies.

Local Laws: Knowing the Lay of the Land

Respecting local regulations is crucial.

  • • Park protocols: National Parks and protected areas often have specific rules. Familiarise yourself with them.
  • • Respect the residents: Remember that people live and work in your expedition area, be respectful of this, keep the noise down, and leave places as you find them.
  • • Access awareness: Adhere to the Countryside Code and respect private land.

Education is Key: From Training to Reflection

Environmental awareness is a journey.

  • • Pre-expedition prep: We’ll incorporate LNT principles into our training sessions.
  • • Post-expedition pondering: Reflect on your impact and identify areas for improvement.

Let’s Make a Difference!

Our DofE expeditions are a chance to explore, learn, and grow. By embracing environmental responsibility, we can ensure that future generations can experience the same incredible adventures. Remember, every small action counts. Let’s tread lightly and explore deeply!
